For today’s Excel tutorial, You will be learning the TEXTJOIN Function. Similar to the concatenate function, TEXTJOIN join strings from different cells together. The key differences are that TEXTJOIN allows you to add in delimiter and ignore or include empty cells, which the concatenate function is unable to do.

We will also show you how to convert your TEXTJOIN Function into an API at the end of the video.

Alright, without further ado, let us go through the example for the day.

How to use TEXTJOIN Function

In our example, we are given a list of people who have gone through their 1st, 2nd and 3rd Vaccination Dose. Okay, let us do a TEXTJOIN that ignore empty cells for Elon. Select Cell G4, type in equal, TEXTJOIN, open parentheses. We will use comma as our delimiter. Open quote, comma and close quote. Type in comma and space. We will ignore the empty cells. Type in TRUE, comma and space. Next, select Cell D4 and drag your cursor to F4, and hit return. You will get AstraZeneca, and Pfizer-BioNtech. Lastly, auto-fill the formula to the remaining cells. Fantastic, all the text are joined neatly.

Next, we will do the TEXTJOIN, which include empty cells. Select Cell H4, type in equal, TEXTJOIN, open parentheses. For delimiter, open quote, comma and close quote. Type in comma and space. This time, we will include the empty cells. Type in FALSE, comma and space. Next, select Cell D4 and drag your cursor to F4, and hit return. You will notice an additional comma behind Pfizer-BioNTech. Which is due to the blank text in Cell F4. Now, let us auto-fill the remainder cells. Awesome, people who had their 3rd dose of vaccine do not have an additional comma at the end of their TEXTJOIN.

I will be using AlchemyJ Studio Excel Add-in to turn this TEXTJOIN Function into an API. To do this, I will need AlchemyJ Excel installed and with a pre-set of rules. I will click on AlchemyJ Tab, select Generate API and click on Generate API. The file is now converting. Okay, your API is ready.

Next, I will select the Alchemy Jay tab and launch this open API that Alchemy Jay generates. I will expand this tab, and select try it out. I will input AstraZeneca as my 1st dose and Pfizer-BioNTech as my 2nd and 3rd dose and select execute. Awesome, we got the TEXTJOIN for the 3 doses. Now, let us try 2 doses and select execute. Excellent, we have 2 doses and a comma at the back to indicate that our 3rd dose is blank.
